Visiting Nurse Health System was incorporated on September 10, 1948, and celebrated the 60th anniversary in 2008. 

Following are a few landmarks in our history:

1948 Visiting Nurse starts work in Fulton and DeKalb counties with two staff nurses
1983 The Hospice Atlanta home program is launched
1985 Visiting Nurse receives the Outstanding Nonprofit Management Award from the Metropolitan Atlanta Community Foundation
1986 Awarded grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for AIDS care
1986 Service expands to a total of 26 counties
1990 Receives financial support from the federal Ryan White Emergency Care Act for AIDS Health Services
1990 The Alzheimer’s Care Program is created
1991 The Children’s Hospice Program begins
1992 “Celebration of Service” event honors Mrs. Rosalyn Carter
1994 Camp STARS, the first bereavement camp in the state for children who have lost a loved one, is launched
1996 The 36-bed Hospice Atlanta Center opens in Buckhead
1996 Visiting Nurse Health System is awarded the first Community Care Services contract, a Medicaid program that helps the elderly or functionally-impaired stay in their homes and communities
2003 The organization is awarded Fulton and DeKalb County Community Care contracts, which help older adults get community-based care and stay in their homes and communities
2005 The in-patient hospice center is renamed the “Andrew and Eula Carlos Hospice Atlanta Center”
2006 Visiting Nurse partners with the Atlanta Regional Commission as the state’s newest SOURCE provider (Service Options Using Resources in Community Environment), a program which helps older adults stay independent and in their homes for as long as possible
2007 The in-home telemonitoring program is launched, allowing patients to have more control over managing their health at home
2008 Visiting Nurse celebrates 60 years of service to the community
2010 Visiting Nurse launches HouseCall program and Clinical Support Center
2011 Visiting Nurse launches Stay-at-Home program
